Archived: Parliamentary Hustings in Oakley – don’t miss it!

Here’s a question; why would anyone vote to reappoint the football manager who got the team relegated and nearly made them bankrupt? It wouldn’t happen would it?

So why would anyone vote for Ed Balls to become our next Chancellor of the Exchequer when he was part of the economic problem in the first place? Is he really the smartest economist Labour has got?

You can ask these types of questions and more in Oakley Village Hall from 7.30pm on Tuesday 21st April.

Come and talk to me too; I will share my thoughts on improving Oakley Ward and making Bedford a better place to live.

Archived: How ambitious are our Mayoral candidates?

Mayoral debate

I hope the mayoral candidates look at this site before they come together for a hustings live on BBC 3CR on 30th April.

I have some questions for the candidates and I submitted them today. Sarah Cox, the editor of the Beds on Sunday, replied and invited me to ask two questions on the night.

invite to mayoral debate

I’m not going to give any candidate an advantage by posting the questions here but make sure you listen in or be there on the night to see whether they have the same levels of ambition and vision for Bedford as I have set out on these pages.

Here is an extract of Sarah’s email to me today.

It’s time for a change in Oakley Ward.

Vote Ade Clewlow on 7th May.

I must the only local candidate in Bedford Borough who can claim to use the words al Qaeda and Mogadishu in a campaign leaflet!

Please read about me and leave a comment.

Vote Ade Clewlow on 7th May.

Archived: The candidates list is out; but there is only one who is committed to the people of the Ward…

So Bedford Borough Council has announced the candidates for Oakley Ward ahead of the election on 7th May.  And it is clear I am the only candidate who is making any effort to connect with people in Oakley, Pavenham and Stevington.

It’s not a surprise that the list is littered with paper candidates  – essentially each major party wants to avoid leaving a Ward without the choice of a candidate, even if they have no intention of canvassing for votes leading up to the election. This is especially true in a General Election year.

It’s happening again in Oakley Ward; the Lib Dem, Labour, UKIP and Green Party candidates are only paper candidates with no intention of trying to connect with people in the Ward. Even the sitting councillor will rely on her reputation to attract enough votes to be returned. The Labour candidate is a serial paper candidate, as she has been entered in elections before as you can see here on a screenshot of the 2009 candidates list for Great Barford Ward;

So your choice is simple: if you want to be represented at the local level by someone who is tech savvy, has an excellent record of public service, who has genuine policies and ambition for the Ward and the Borough that will change people’s lives for the better and who is highly skilled in getting things done in the face of real challenges, then vote for me on 7th May.

Read more about me on this site.  As you can see, I am not a paper candidate as the hundreds of people who have already met me on their doorsteps will confirm!

Campaigning has allowed me to understand people's concerns like never before.
Campaigning has allowed me to understand people’s concerns like never before.

I decided to stand as a Borough Council candidate for the Conservatives over Christmas and was endorsed in early January.  I started knocking on doors immediately and it has been a wonderful experience so far.  OK, so some people are rude and ignorant and close the door very quickly, but the vast majority of people are intrigued by my approach.

I always introduce myself and explain that you now have a choice on 7th May for the person you want to elect as your Borough Councillor; this has not been the case for many years as nobody has ever seriously stood against the sitting councillor. In 2011 the Conservative party did not even put forward a candidate. This makes benchmarking my progress difficult but I have been encouraged by so much support and intelligent conversation on the streets of Oakley, Pavenham and Stevington. One of the most talked about subjects is crime; like all of us who live in villages, burglaries and robberies have the potential to change people’s lives in a split second. The Police need to reassure the residents of these villages that they are actively hunting for those behind the rising number of these types of crimes.

If you see me, stop and have a chat. I may well be knocking on your door soon as well. I want to represent you in the Borough Council and I want to listen to your views. I have been leading and listening to people for my entire career and representing you would be one of my greatest achievements.

Vote Ade Clewlow on 7th May.

Campaigning with Alistair in Oakley earlier this year.

February 2015

I spent a couple of hours canvassing with Alistair Burt earlier in the year.  To make changes in the Ward and the Borough, it is essential to have good relationships in Westminster. If Alistair is re-elected in the General Election, I am confident that he will do all he can to support me as your Borough Councillor if you elect me on 7th May.
